Having duly noted Richard Straw's comment about "performers need[ing] to be from the South" and Jeffrey Grey's citing of Wynton Marsalis' notion of jazz being "non-authentic" if played by those not of African descent, it leads me to wonder what to do with someone such as Neil Young. Much of Young's material that I am familiar with seems to have authentic "Southern" roots, to the point that had I not already known, the thought never would have crossed my mind that he is from Canada and has performed with numerous California-based musicians over the years. Any comments? Derrick D. Little Penn State Harrisburg
